PORTLAND (AP) – The latest estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau says Maine’s population grew by 1,058 from July 2007 to July 2008, an increase of 0.1 percent.
The bureau estimates the number of Mainers at 1,316,456.
Maine tied with Vermont for the lowest population gain in New England. New Hampshire and Connecticut grew by 0.3 percent and Massachusetts was up 0.5 percent.
Rhode Island, whose population shrunk by 0.2 percent, and Michigan were the only two states that lost population.
Utah’s 2.5 percent growth was the nation’s fastest, following by Arizona, Texas, North Carolina and Colorado.
