RANGELEY – Police are awaiting results of evidence testing before moving forward in the theft of 6,000 narcotic pills from Rangeley Pharmacy on Route 4 earlier this month.

Police said a narcotics cabinet was cleaned out in less than four minutes on the evening of Dec. 5. The pharmacy’s security company notified police of a break-in after motion-detecting alarms were triggered.

When police officer Jared Austin arrived at the scene three minutes after he was alerted, he found the front door pried open. Police believe it was a well-planned heist because the store had only been empty of customers and employees for about 20 minutes when the alarm sounded.

About 6,000 pills, a mix of Oxycodin, OxyContin, Vyvance, Avinza, morphine sulfate tablets and methadone were stolen, police Chief Dennis Leahy said after the heist.

Based on evidence at the scene, police believe there were at least two suspects and that they fled on foot heading north on Main Street.

A trained dog tracked the suspects to a parking lot of a local laundry where police believe the suspects got into a vehicle and escaped.

“We are waiting for the crime lab to give us the results of the evidence collected at the scene,” Leahy said Tuesday.
