JAY – Three people were injured Tuesday morning when two cars collided head-on on Route 4 at its intersection with Route 17 in North Jay.

Pamela Hardin-Dexter, 63, of Franconia, N.H., was driving east on Route 17 toward Route 4 and failed to stop at a stop sign, striking a northbound vehicle on Route 4 head-on, police officer Steve Wilkinson said.

That vehicle was driven by Donald Tremblay, 47, of Lewiston, he said.

Both vehicles slid across the intersection and off the side of the road, coming to rest on the side of Old Jay Hill Road, Wilkinson said. Air bags went off in both vehicles and all occupants were wearing seat belts, he said.

Hardin-Dexter’s husband and passenger, Lewis Dexter, 62, complained of chest pain and was taken by NorthStar Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, he said.

Tremblay complained of ankle pain and was treated at the scene by medics. His passenger and registered owner of the car, April Ross, 26, of New Sharon possibly suffered a broken leg and was also taken by ambulance to FMH, Wilkinson said.

Both Ross’ 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier and Hardin-Dexter’s 2002 Camry convertible were demolished, he said.

“It appears driver inattention and running a stop sign caused the accident,” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson said Detective Drew Hufnagel and Jay firefighters assisted at the scene.
