JAY – Cecil A. Holman, 87, a resident of Main Street in Jay, died Monday, Dec. 29, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on April 7, 1921, in Jay, the son of Arthur L. and Lelia (Wilkins) Holman and was a graduate of Jay High School. On Dec. 27, 1941, in Wilton, he married Hazel G. McCourt and they made their home in Jay. She passed away in 1991.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He worked for the post office as a mail carrier in North Jay, retiring in 1970 after 22 years of service. After his retirement, he worked as a carpenter for Daniel’s Construction Co. in Rumford and also for Kermit Greenleaf.
He was a volunteer mechanic for many years at the Stanley Steamer Museum in Kingfield, and traveled to New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and New York to repair the cars. He was a former member of the Jay Fire Department and the Jay Police Department reserve force. He was a life member of the VFW, Frank L. Mitchell, Post 3335 of Jay and the Country Classics Car Club of Farmington. He also volunteered for 17 years at the Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington earning the most volunteer hours to date.
He enjoyed puttering around the house and tinkering on different projects, browsing on e-Bay and also jigsaw puzzles. In 2002, he purchased a 1955 Korean War vintage Jeep ambulance to drive in local parades and car shows.
He is survived by his son, Arthur Holman and his wife, Angie, of Jay; two daughters, Judy Martin and her husband, Charles, of North Jay and Anita Ladd and her husband, Jonathan, also of North Jay; six grandchildren, Darren Homan and his wife, Tammy, Dale Holman, Aleece Martin Kaulback and her husband, Dayl, Todd Ladd and his wife, Karen, Travis Ladd and Carroll Ladd and his wife, Dianna; two sisters, Evelyn Sidell of Texas and Florida, and Marilyn Lohnes of Waterville; six great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Virginia Easter of Wilton and Florida.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Burchard and Blynn Holman.
