When you see Bill Gordon of Auburn, shake hands with him for he is the champion marathon runner of that city. George Golder is no longer the champion. They challenged each other to a 50-yard race Monday night, the event taking place on Turner Street for a purse of 25 cents. A crowd of several hundred people gathered along the sides of the street to watch the event. The race was close and exciting. First Golder led and then Gordon by a mighty burst of speed that brought the blood rushing to his manly brow forged ahead. Gordon won about half a length, but fell into the arms of an admiring crowd of ladies who decked him with laurels and said nice things to him.

50 years ago, 1958

Jan. 17 has been designated dedication night for the public opening of Lewiston’s shiny new million dollar Central Maine Youth Center, according to yesterday’s announcement by CMYC spokesman Rosaire Halle. The commemoration ceremonies, scheduled at 8 o’clock, will be followed by a hockey game between Lewiston’s Bates Mfg. Co. Fabrics seniors and the Rochester, N.Y. Olympics.

The same hockey teams will vie the following afternoon at 2 o’clock and Halle said it is planned to go right into the regular schedule of activities with public skating that evening, Sunday, Jan. 18.

25 years ago, 1983

A week ago, after an embarrassing 10-0 loss to St. Dom’s, it was easy to figure out the Edward Little hockey team. The Red Eddies were just a group that would beat the weak members of the Maine Interscholastic Hockey League, but eventually lose to the powers.

However …

The Red Eddies overcame a second-period Lewiston blitz and knocked off the Blue Devils 5-4 Thursday at the Central Maine Youth Center before some 1,300 fans. The win raises its MIHL record to 4-1-1 as well as its playoff hopes. It also marks the first time in over 11 years that EL has beaten the Blue Devils.
