I am writing in response to Donna Perry’s article printed Dec. 22, “Fire Marshal: Training enforcement not up to us.”

The Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Standards, wishes to commend the Livermore Falls Board of Selectmen for adopting a pro-active policy requiring fire officers to be in compliance with required state and/or federal training.

The Department of Labor has a number of compliance guidelines on its Web site at www.maine.gov/labor, Workplace Safety and Health, Public Sector Enforcement. The compliance guideline directives for public employers can be found there.

In addition to online assistance, the Bureau of Labor Standards will be scheduling regional compliance meetings in the late winter and early spring to answer all public sector safety questions, including fire departments.

Thank you for your commitment to workplace safety and health.
