LEWISTON – Charles W. “Charlie” Coombs, 77, of Livermore, died Monday, Dec. 29, at the Central Maine Medical Center, after a short illness with his family surrounding him.
He was born on Jan. 18, 1931, in Ellsworth, the son of Forest and Celia (Fernald) Coombs. He attended schools in Franklin and Livermore.
On June 27, 1953, he married Betty Judd at the Methodist Church in Bath.
As a young man, Charlie worked as a camp counselor at a boys camp and later as a truck driver hauling potatoes from Presque Isle to Boston. He retired from the shoe business at the age of 55 working at Norwalk Shoe in North Jay and GH Bass in Wilton. In his “retirement,” he worked with his family at Construction Consultants, Inc. in Livermore land surveying, officially retiring at 65.
He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping, tying flies, archery, golf and traveling with his son throughout the U.S. and Canada, stock car racing.
He especially loved spending time with his granddaughter, Allison Coombs. He relished every chance he had with her.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Livermore; his son, Douglas “Doug” Coombs and his wife, Rosanna, and their daughter, Allison, of Livermore; a brother, Erland Coombs of Wells; his father-in-law, Thomas Judd Sr. of Livermore; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Roland Coombs; a sister, Lillian Emerton; and his mother-in-law, Nathalie Judd.
