LEWISTON – A six-week studio oil painting workshop will be given by artist Michael Ranucci, through L/A Arts, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 221 Lisbon St. Participation fee is $110 a person.
Meeting weekly for three-hour sessions, participants will gain insight into the traditional “grand manner” of oil painting by completing a still life study in the studio from a preliminary drawing through finishing details, using the visual/artistic fundamentals first developed by the old masters.
Participants will work with and discuss pictorial elements such as concept, visual aesthetics, lighting, composition, techniques in paint handling, draftsmanship and materials.
Basic approaches such as under painting, scumbling, glazing and other techniques will be revealed by “doing” in each participant’s painting. Individual attention and demonstrations will be stressed.
Participants should have a degree of fundamental artistic skills and will need to provide their own basic oil painting colors and supplies, specified medium, easel, and a few other miscellaneous items. Basic artistic skills recommended.
Attendees will be contacted directly with a more detailed list prior to the first meeting. The workshop requires a minimum number of students to sign up and is restricted to a maximum of 10.
In the instance of inclement weather, artists will be notified and the session will be rescheduled.
Ranucci’s lifelong interest in visual arts was first developed through independent drawing and school art classes. Drawing and art classes at the college level further rounded out his early learning in the visual arts.
After graduating and through the 1980s, he continued with drawing and using acrylic paints for landscapes as well as experimenting with abstract work. During this time, his abstract work advanced his understanding of balance and design; however, his inspiration was always rooted in realistic representational art.
Ranucci’s work evolved into a representational style that pays close attention to abstract design. Further development came through years of completing a variety of art classes and workshops, including three years of study with master classical artists Numael and Shirley Pulido in Hancock, N.H.
