AUBURN – A Wilton man charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old son last month was sent back to jail Friday in lieu of $50,000.

David Cook, 25, had been hospitalized in Lewiston shortly after his arrest and booking at the Franklin County jail in Farmington on Dec. 26. Authorities said he took a medication overdose in an apparent suicide attempt the day of his arrest. He was discharged earlier this week.

In Androscoggin County Superior Court on Friday, Cook’s bail was reviewed and he was ordered to have no contact with anyone under age 12, a change from an earlier order prohibiting contact with anyone younger than 6 years old.

He also was ordered by a judge to have no contact with Brandy Swett, the mother of Matteo Hanson, who authorities say died at Cook’s hands.

Cook told police the boy fell down a flight of stairs, possibly pushed by his 3-year-old sister, while Cook was caring for them at Swett’s apartment on Route 2 on Nov. 29. But a state medical examiner who performed an autopsy on Hanson said his injuries were not consistent with a fall down stairs. She said the boy died from extensive blunt force trauma to the torso, consistent with being severely kicked or punched.

Cook, who lives with his mother on Route 156 but occasionally stayed with Swett, told police responding to a 911 call to the apartment that he left the two children at the top of the stairs and when he came back Hanson was lying at the bottom of the staircase.

If Cook posts $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 surety, he can’t leave the state and must notify his attorney, David Sanders, the judge said.

Cook, wearing an orange jail suit and denim jail-issue jacket, was led from the courtroom by Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies and returned to jail in Farmington, a court clerk said.

Cook was scheduled to be back in court in March. His case is expected to be presented to a Franklin County grand jury for an indictment, a clerk said.
