YARMOUTH – Several businesses, located in what used to a racket club, were going up in flames on Route 1 late Friday night and fire crews from at least a half-dozen towns were battling the blaze.

The fire at the 500 block on Route 1 was reported at about 8:30 p.m. More than two hours later, firefighters were still trying to knock down flames at the building that is home to several businesses, including a hair salon, a pet store and at least one doctor’s office.

At about 10:45 p.m., Yarmouth police said the fire was still burning but they could provide no further information. Yarmouth fire crews were joined by Falmouth, Portland, Cumberland, Windham and Freeport firefighters. There was no immediate word on a possible cause and it was unclear whether anyone was injured in the fire.
