A solid debut by a new goaltender went for naught Saturday as the Lewiston Maineiacs lost their sixth consecutive game, all of them by two goals or fewer.

Mikhail Stefanovich netted a pair of goals and Hubert Genest added a goal and an assist to lead the Quebec Remparts to a 4-2 victory over the Maineiacs in front of 10,455 at the Pepsi Colisee in Quebec City.

Goaltender Adrien Lemay made his Lewiston debut Saturday night after being signed this week as a free agent. The 19-year-old keeper made 24 saves on 28 shots, including some dandies in the first period to keep things scoreless.

“It’s his hometown, I thought it would be good to get him in there and see what he can do,” Maineiacs’ coach Ed Harding said. “He made a couple of real key saves for us early, in the first period. He held his ground in the second period pretty well, and he was OP.K. in the third except maybe for the last goal.”

Lemay played most recently for the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, where he had 11 win in 19 games, with a 3.01 GAA and a .921 save percentage.

“Hockey is a small community,” Harding said. “I have some contacts out in Saskatchewan, and we spoke with his agent, and went from there.”

The teams skated to a scoreless first, largely thanks to Lemay, who stopped a pair of point-blank chances, one with his shoulder, the other with his pads as he stacked them high on an opportunity in tight.

In the second, Quebec broke through with a power play goal to take a 1-0 edge, only to have Danick Paquette strike back on the power play to even things up at one apiece.

“I was very happy with the way we played in the first period,” Harding said. “We showed lots of patience and intelligence. We had good changes, and we methodically worked our way out of some situations. In the second, we got a little helter skelter at times, but we battled back through that to keep the score tied up.”

Quebec again took the lead in the third, this time converting on a rare Patrick Cusack turnover. Jean-Simon Allard fed Stefanovich alone in front to put the home team back on top by one.

A power play goal from Genest a few minutes later put the home team on top to stay. Lewiston got one back on a shorthanded breakaway bid by Billy Lacasse, but Stefanovich shut the door at 13:07 with his 20th of the season.

There is little time for rest for Lewiston, which plays again Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. against the Saint John Sea Dogs.

“That’s what these boys signed up for,” Harding said. “I’m ready to go (Sunday), and so are they.”

The Maineiacs will also host the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Tuesday before spending the better part of the next two weeks on the road.
