CUMBERLAND – With each surge Greely produced in the first half Saturday, the Gray-New Gloucester girls’ basketball team answered with a spurt of its own.

In the second half, the Rangers hoped to end that trend. Greely raced out to a lead that the Patriots couldn’t counter, and the Rangers finished off a 50-39 victory.

“Good teams, if you give them opportunities, they’ll put you away, and that’s what happened,” said Gray-New Gloucester coach Chris Aube.

The Rangers used a 10-2 run early in the third to build their largest lead of the game. Though the Patriots got five straight to close the gap to 30-28 late in the quarter, Greely got back-to-back 3-pointers. The Patriots were never closer than six after that.

“The third quarter was ours this game,” said junior guard Karlee Biskup. “We knew we had to come out strong. We were trying to get the lead so they weren’t able to comeback on us.”

Biskup finished with a game-high 19 points, 17 coming in the second half. Abby Young dominated the post with 16 for the Rangers (6-1). The Patriots (4-4) were led by Laura Getchell with 11 while Terri-Lynn Sanborn and Alicia Valente each added eight.

“I don’t think we played very good defense the whole second half,” said Aube. “I don’t think we worked hard enough. (Biskup) was able to get to the basket early. It wasn’t like we were playing defense for 20 to 30 seconds. She brought the ball up and went right by our defenders.”

Trailing 20-19 at the half, the Patriots got a drive by Rachel Clement, who finished with seven points, to give G-NG the lead. The Patriots then missed their next five shots and turned the ball over six times in the quarter. Greely, meanwhile, hit four of its first five from the floor and shot 7-for-14.

“I wasn’t on in the first half, but after we gave it to the post on the inside, they kicked it back out,” said Biskup. “We were able to get the shots off.”

Biskup scored eight points during the 10-2 surge. She scored twice cutting through the lane and then hit a short jumper. After two free throws by Getchell, Biskup scored on a drive and Danielle Slocum hit a jumper from the corner.

“We needed to get out on shooters,” said Aube. “We doubled down, and they kicked it out and hit 3’s in the second half.”

After free throws by Getchell and Clement, Getchell hit a short jumper to cut the score to 30-28. Biskup and Young drilled a pair of 3’s to end the quarter 36-28.

“That was huge,” said Biskup. “Coach (Bill Goodman) was very happy.”

After shooting 2-for-10 in the third, the Patriots shot 3-for-11 in the fourth. G-NG struggled the entire game to feed the post and missing forward Kassie Wilson to an ankle injury didn’t help the cause. That left G-NG living off its perimeter game, and that made it hard to produce offense consistently.

The Patriots got baskets from Sanborn and Getchell in the fourth to trim the deficit to six, but a pair of 3-pointers by Biskup and a basket by Nicole Faietta on a Biskup feed made it 46-32.

“It was tough,” said Aube. “We didn’t get open shots, and we didn’t take care of the ball.”
