GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) – Two fishermen are dead after their trawler sank in waters off Gloucester.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Connie Terrell said the bodies of 36-year-old Matteo Russo and his father-in-law, 58-year-old John Orlando, both of Gloucester, were pulled from the water, though the boat hadn’t been found.

Terrell said a Coast Guard cutter, helicopter and rescue boat rushed to the trawler Patriot’s last known location after an onboard fire alarm went off at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday. Another alarm that’s activated when a vessel goes under water later went off.

Terrell said crews soon discovered debris and Orlando’s body. Russo’s body was located later Saturday.

It’s not yet known why the Patriot sank. Terrell said the 54-foot boat had recently been inspected and had proper safety gear.
