SKOWHEGAN – Barbara Gilman Smith, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 2, at Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

She was born March 20, 1928, in Abington, Mass., the daughter of Charles A. and Dorothy (Kenerson) Gilman. Barbara was educated in schools in Abington, Mass., and attended a business school in Boston.

She was a longtime member of the Calvary Pentecostal Church in Madison and will be remembered as a person who would always offer an encouraging word.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

She is survived by her children, Wayne Smith and his wife, Laura, of New Mexico, Tom Smith of Solon, Peter Smith and his wife, Leesha, of Madison and Jim Smith and his wife, Lynn, of Anson; she was deeply involved with all of her 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; also surviving are two brothers, Norman Gilman and his wife, Bea, of Miami, Fla., and Roger Gilman and his wife, Delina, of Oregon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Barbara was predeceased by a daughter, Tina Frost; a granddaughter, Tory Smith; and a brother, Richard Gilman.
