TEMPLE – A 20-year-old Temple man is expected to make a full recovery after accidentally shooting himself in the hip Saturday afternoon while target practicing in Franklin County.

Deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department determined that the victim, Chad Baker, accidentally discharged his 9 mm handgun and shot himself in the hip while target practicing at the town dump in Temple.

The sheriff’s department was contacted by Franklin Memorial Hospital staff after Baker was transported there in a private vehicle.

No charges are expected to be filed as a result of the investigation, but deputies stress that the incident highlights the need for proper training when in comes to handling firearms. The incident further points to proper maintenance and repair of firearms, according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office, because a possible malfunction with the gun in also considered a factor.
