FARMINGTON – A day of free skiing and snowboarding is planned for Sunday at Titcomb Mountain in West Farmington.

A community day will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 11 for skiers, snowboarders and cross-country skiers, manager Karleen Andrews said. There will be no charge for lift tickets or trail passes, thanks for a donation by Franklin Savings Bank.

Equipment rentals, on a first-come, first-served basis, are priced at $5, sponsored by Northern Lights rental shop. The shop has skis and snowboards available to rent for those who want to try the sport, but the supply is limited. Those intending to rent are advised to come early, she said.

Andrews is asking participants to bring three canned or packaged food items to donate to the food pantry in Farmington. While other ski areas collect food items usually around their opening day or the holidays, Andrews said she decided to tie it in with this event.

“It’s a great little ski area . . . a treasure in our own backyard,” said Anna Lyon, assistant vice president, marketing director at Franklin Savings. “As a community bank, we’re supportive of community activities and we also want to promote healthy winter exercise.”

The bank has supported similar activities at Black Mountain in Rumford and Spruce Mountain in Jay and found the events were a hit with area residents, she said.

“Last year it was very touching to see families with several kids who couldn’t afford to ski really enjoy it and they found they could come back,” she said. “It’s a good introduction to skiing and we hope a lot of people turn out.”

Last year, an evening of free skiing was offered later in the season. Inclement weather interfered but once the night was held about 200 residents participated. A second free ski night saw closer to 300 skiers involved, Andrews said.

Titcomb Mountain offers terrain for skiers of all ages and ability for both downhill and cross-country skiing enthusiasts.
