AUBURN – An Androscoggin County grand jury issued indictments Wednesday against five people accused of assaulting five people with baseball bats at a home in Auburn last month.
Tiny J. Cahill, 22, Nicholas R. Baril, 20, and Brandon Ray Staples, 21, all of Lewiston, and Amanda Mae Benoit, 20, of Jay, were each indicted on one count of burglary, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of assault. Nicholas S. Pelletier, 18, of Auburn was indicted on the same five charges, as well as theft by unauthorized taking.
The five were arrested by Lewiston police in connection with a Dec. 7 attack on Western Avenue where residents Donna Gammon, 39, and her son, Matthew, 18, were robbed and hit with baseball bats.
Also assaulted during the incident were friends of her son: Jacob Legee, 18, and Tyler Johnson, 18.
Police said the five knew Gammon and her son, and believed that the two had stolen items from them.
According to previous reports, Cahill, Benoit, Staples and Pelletier knocked on Gammon’s door around 9 p.m. and were let in. They then robbed the home and assaulted the occupants, police said.
The four fled in an SUV – Baril was the driver – that was stopped on Longley Bridge in Lewiston soon after the assault, police said.
Benoit, Staples, Pelletier and Baril have been involved in fights before, police said.
