One of the questions posed to the Ward 4 candidates for Auburn City Council (Jan. 5, Sun Journal) is misleading. “School officials” are not responsible for the discussion of a new Edward Little High School. The School Committee is responsible.
In its master plan discussions, the School Committee reached consensus that renovation or replacement of the high school facility is the highest priority.
In early fall 2008, in response to a “Request for Qualifications,” the School Committee received proposals from six firms interested in providing a concept design for a new high school. An architect selection subcommittee (made up of representatives from city staff, City Council, school staff, School Committee and Auburn citizens) recommended Harriman Associates of Auburn for the job. The School Committee, at its Nov. 19 meeting, accepted that recommendation. Harriman is now working with a Building Committee, representing a cross-section of Auburn citizens, to develop a concept design.
As with any school construction project, that plan must go to a citywide binding referendum, which is tentatively scheduled for November 2009.
Building Committee information, including agendas and minutes, is available on the Auburn School Department Web site.
