I have to hand it to Harley Lee of Endless Energy. He certainly has chutzpah in submitting another proposal for an ambitious wind farm on Black Nubble and Redington Pond Range.

This project has been around before, and each time it was denied on the basis of violating established legal restrictions at elevations above 2,700 feet, or for aesthetic reasons.

Earlier applications were supported by claims of added jobs, lower electric rates, and doubtful technical data to refute environmental concerns. The Land Use Regulation Commission recognized these shortcomings and the overwhelming resistance of local citizens and chose not to approve the projects.

Now Lee is working an end-around move to sidestep LURC altogether by removing the land from its jurisdiction by asking Carrabassett Valley to annex the property through legislative action and a vote by the town. Lee dangles the prospect of an increased tax base, lower electric rates, more jobs, etc., to entice approval.

Yet the original factors considered by LURC remain as valid as before and continue to be of concern to all Maine citizens, not just those of Carrabassett Valley. The entire state would lose irreplaceable natural features should this latest proposal be adopted by the town.

Lee should acknowledge the meaning of the word “no” and discontinue his efforts to build this frightful wind farm project. Barring that, voters of Carrabassett Valley should decline annexing Redington Pond Range and Black Nubble, and continue to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
