BANGOR (AP) – A Bangor man whose blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit when he crashed his car repeatedly has been sentenced to five years in prison under Maine’s repeat-offender law.

Iver Cardwell, who’s 27, was convicted on charges of aggravated operating after habitual offender revocation and criminal operating under the influence stemming from the incident in November 2007. He also pleaded guilty to driving after revocation in a separate case.

All told, Cardwell now has three OUI convictions and three operating-after-revocation convictions. Prosecutor Greg Campbell said Friday that Cardwell’s case is a prime example of why the Legislature enacted “Tina’s Law” in 2006. The law is named for Tina Turcotte, who died in an accident caused by a Houlton truck driver who had 63 prior driving convictions and had been involved in a previous fatal accident.
