Edward Little junior Christie Bernier led her two Maine Racewalkers Club training partners Abby Dunn and Nicole Court-Menendez to a sweep of gold, silver, and bronze at the collegiate/open one mile women’s racewalk at the Dartmouth relays this weekend. Bernier, who just returned from two weeks of training in Pharr, Tex., won the mile racewalk in 8:16.50, followed in second place by Dunn, an EL freshman, in 8:25.79, and in third by Court-Menendez, a freshman at Lewiston, in 8:57.39. All three are coached by Tom Menendez of Lewiston.

Boothbay junior Matthew Forgues, also returning from Pharr, led three fellow club athletes in a sweep of the first four places in the collegiate/open men’s racewalk in a time of 7:01.41 for the mile. Lisbon senior Tyler Campbell followed in second in 7:35.08, followed by Maranacook sophomore Evan Vincent in 7:43.72, and Falmouth junior Charlie Swerdlow in 8:20.77. Mt. Blue sophomore Fairfield Bonsall captured sixth place in 8:55.46 to round out the Maine contingent.

Forgues’ mile time of 6:55 in Pharr last week, combined with his time today at Dartmouth, along with whatever time he walks in Boston next week may qualify him for racing in the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden in early February.

Next week the Maine Racewalkers move to the Greater Boston Invitational at Harvard University in the 3000 meter racewalk. Further racewalking competition during January and February will lead up to the Nike Indoor Championship in Boston and the National Scholastic Indoor Championship in New York City in March.
