LEWISTON – A suspicious item found in the bathroom of a local Islamic temple Sunday afternoon turned out to be a carpenter’s tool instead of a bomb.

Police Sgt. Kelly Hamel said that a caller from the Lewiston-Auburn Islamic Center reported an item that looked like a bomb to authorities at 3:20 p.m. Both police and firefighters responded to the 21 Lisbon St. temple.

Hamel said the device in question turned out to be a carpenter’s chalk reel, a tool used to make straight-edge chalk lines in construction work.
