Lewiston – A special agent has taken 10 firearms, including three sawed-off shotguns, from Lewiston’s streets.
Special Agent David Levesque, a Lewiston cop on assignment with the Central Maine Violent Crime Task Force and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and federal DEA, bought 10 firearms: five handguns, three sawed-off shotguns and two assault rifles from Donovan Beavers, 20, of Auburn and Richard James, 43, of Auburn over three months, police said Monday.
Beavers and James were charged with federal firearms trafficking.
The bust is one of three involving firearms and resulted from undercover buy operations and seizures of firearms by four agencies.
In one of the others, David Strout, 19, of Lewiston was arrested on Dec. 21 at 313 Bates St. when police responded to a fight at that address. A vehicle attempting to leave the scene was stopped and searched, yielding a loaded assault rifle. As a result of LPD’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Task Force, Strout was charged with having a loaded firearm in a vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon.
The LPD, Task Force and DEA also discovered six stolen firearms at an undisclosed location in Lewiston, acting on a tip on Dec. 30. Along with two assault rifles, two handguns and two rifles, police also recovered a bulletproof vest.
All items were stolen in a Portland burglary earlier in the month.
Cocaine and marijuana, along with cash were also found. Charges are pending.
Two other handguns from the same Portland burglary have also been recovered.
