AUGUSTA (AP) – Anti-smoking activists say Maine’s once-perfect rating continues to slip, as it gives the state a mix of grades for its tobacco-control efforts.

In its rating for 2008, the American Lung Association of Maine gives Maine an A for smoke-free air, a B for tobacco taxes, and a pair of C’s, one for treatment services and one for program funding.

Maine had a run of straight-A’s from the lung association before it got three A’s and a B a year ago. The lung association says the fallback shows what can happen when program funding is lost.

Next door, New Hampshire fared worse, with grades of D, C and two F’s for 2008.

Vermont ended up with an A, B, D and F.
