BIDDEFORD – Sister Rella Hebert, 95, formerly known as Sister St. Aurele, died at St. Joseph Convent on Jan. 11.

She was born on May 3, 1913, in Guerette. She was the eighth child in a family of 13 children born to Frank Hebert and Agnes Gagnon. After her elementary education in Guerette, she completed her high school education, then attended St. Joseph College in Windham.

In January 1938, she entered the Congregation of the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, in Biddeford. After her initial training in religious life, her long 20 years of teaching in elementary schools took her to St. Joseph School in Biddeford and in Old Town and Caribou, Mt. Carmel School and St. Ann Orphanage in Methuen, Mass., and St. Ann School in Lawrence, Mass.

When she retired from teaching, her interest in social work led her to study to become a licensed social worker and she later obtained a license in administration from Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute.

She was the social worker in a Biddeford nursing home for 10 years, before taking the position of director at S.S. Schooner Estate in Auburn. When she retired, she continued visiting and helping residents in her area. Because of her health, she was transferred to St. Joseph Convent Infirmary in 2003.

She is survived by one sister, Sister Nora Hebert, S.C.I.M., from Biddeford; and several nieces and nephews.
