LEWISTON – Scammers trying to get personal bank information from Androscoggin Bank customers last Sunday afternoon apparently only found “a few” victims, according to bank authorities, who started getting calls Monday from concerned clients.

Roy Hibyan, executive vice president for operations and technology, said the scammers impersonated bank security employees, told the people they called that there was a problem with their accounts and that the bank needed to get personal information from them, including account numbers and pin numbers.

Hibyan said the bank received three to four dozen calls from concerned customers starting Monday, and the number of people scammers called was likely larger. He said it appears the scammers were calling local numbers randomly – bank customers and noncustomers alike.

Most of the people contacted by the scammers refused to give information, Hibyan said, but a few did. The bank is changing the account numbers and personal information of everyone its knows of who gave out information.

“People need to know we would never ask for information we already have. The public needs to be very, very aware of that,” Hibyan said.

He said if a person receives a call from someone asking them to reveal personal financial information, the person should refuse. If they have a doubt, they can call their financial institution during operating hours, but should look up the phone number and not rely on a phone number offered by the caller.

Hibyan said the bank is not aware of any misuse of the information obtained by scammers from the few bank customers who gave out their information.
