This is in response to the letter to the editor from Denise Dyer, published Jan. 10, regarding rules of the road. She was right on.
My students and I have seen about everything while driving. We have seen women applying makeup, men eating breakfast and reading the newspaper.
Two areas that I wish experienced drivers would correct include using signals when turning or making lane changes. It is very helpful for a driver following to know what intentions are.
My biggest peeve is with tailgaters. I guess many people don’t realize their cars cannot stop on a dime, especially on roads wet from rain, snow or ice. I encourage my students, when following another vehicle, to stay at least one car length behind for every 10 mph of speed.
I would warn any student driver not to get smart with a tailgater, you will lose every time. I instruct my students that when there is a tailgater, put the right blinker on, move to the right when it is safe, and let the tailgater pass.
