The overall goal is to provide 12 huts in a system that will stretch nearly 180 miles from the Mahoosuc Mountains on the New Hampshire border near Bethel to the shores of Moosehead Lake.
Varying from season and section, those visiting would be able to pursue non-motorized activities including hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and flat-water and whitewater boating or paddling.
Most of the connecting trails are on privately owned land.
Large portions of the current two-hut system belong to the Penobscot Indian Nation.
The goal is to set each hut about a day’s hike (12 miles) from the next.
What it costs
Staying at a hut ranges in price from $65 a night in off-peak times to $85 a night during peak times for adults. Children can stay for $20 to $25 per night; discounts offered to groups drop the price to about $45 per person.
The cost includes two meals, usually breakfast and dinner. The huts also have lunch offerings for day visitors.
Memberships are available at different levels with the least-expensive individual membership starting at $35 per year. Membership benefits include discounted lodging prices.
