AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine regulators will consider a request calling for a 64 percent rate increase for dispatching rescue and fire units in more than 100 towns across the state.
The Maine Public Safety Department – which answers 911 emergency calls in most communities in Kennebec, York and Aroostook counties – is proposing that fees go up to pay for increased costs.
According to the Maine Municipal Association, the fees would rise from $2.50 to $4 per person in those towns. Some town officials and state legislators say the fee increase is too much, especially during these tough economic times.
The proposed rate increase will be deliberated by the Maine Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday.
