LEWISTON – Filing off the yellow school bus one-by-one, the Lewiston Maineiacs returned to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Monday afternoon after a field trip.

“I like to use things like this as team-building activities,” coach Don MacAdam said. “It’s good for them.”

Earlier in the day, after practice, the team hopped a ride on that same bus to Portland, to watch the Pirates play the Hartford Wolfpack in an AHL matinee at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

When they got back, beyond figuring out who was going to eat where and at what time, the team’s focus turned back to its own brand of hockey, and to one of the best teams in the league, Drummondville.

The Voltigeurs will visit Lewiston on Tuesday night in the Maineiacs’ first home game since MacAdam took over as coach.

“My feeling is that the guys are really positive, they’re really upbeat and they’re confident in their game,” MacAdam said. “I listed a number of things on the board this morning, and asked the players to rate how they felt we were in those areas, on a scale of one to 10 … They were almost identical.”

Lewiston has won two in a row three times, but has yet to win three consecutive games this season. And Tuesday’s opponent has had its way with Lewiston. Drummondville is 4-0-0-1 against Lewiston, outscoring the Maineiacs 36-15 in five games. That includes three blowout wins in one week in November.

“We all remember that, and we definitely don’t want to see that happen again,” Maineiacs’ defenseman Patrick Cusack said. “That’s a source of motivation, for sure.”

The Volts have a high-powered offense – their 219 goals are the most in the league, and are also more than four teams scored all of last season.

“It makes us have to be good in our own zone,” Maineiacs’ captain Danick Paquette said. “We know we cannot make mistakes against this offense, and we have to stay out of the box.”

The Maineiacs play the rest of January at home, amounting to five consecutive games, before spending seven of their 10 February games at rinks outside of the United States.

“If we go 1-2 at home (this week), we’ve wasted the wins on the road,” MacAdam said. “If we go two win, two losses and a tie, that’s average. I think we can do two out of three this week, that’s where we want to be, and that’s a minimum three-for-five homestand. We have to be at least 60 percent at home, or you’re not going to gain ground.”

After Tuesday’s tilt with Drummondville, Lewiston hosts Val d’Or, Montreal, and Victoriaville twice.
