PORTLAND (AP) – As many as 70 South Portland-based employees of Fairchild Semiconductor are losing their jobs.

The Portland Press Herald quotes the chipmaker as saying between 50 and 70 workers will be laid off or will take early retirement as part of a worldwide cutback that was announced a month ago.

Fairchild spokeswoman Patti Olson says some of the affected workers have already left the company, while others will remain on the job through March.

Olson said the layoffs are across the board, and include manufacturing and engineering jobs.
