LISBON – Police said Thursday that a hostage report made by a local woman last week was bogus. They arrested the woman and charged her in connection with the incident.
Renee Cartier, 32, of 35 Town and Country Drive, was taken into custody by police Thursday morning on a warrant charging her with one count of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and one count of creating a false public alarm, police Chief David Brooks said.
She was also charged with filing a false report and false swearing in connection with allegations she made the day after the hostage report that personal checks had been stolen from her home, Brooks said.
On Jan. 14, police responded to a reported hostage situation at Cartier’s home. Police say Cartier told them she had been held hostage there for two and a half days and was forced to perform sex acts before escaping.
At that time, 31-year-old Shameek Garcia of Lewiston, a convicted felon, was arrested at Cartier’s home and charged with violating conditions of his release.
Brooks said Thursday that an investigation found evidence that crack cocaine was being manufactured and used in Cartier’s home. He said police could not corroborate Cartier’s statement that she had been sexually assaulted or a claim she made that a gun had been involved in the incident.
The investigation into Cartier’s statements about the stolen checks led Lisbon detectives to Lewiston and Auburn where, Brooks said, they learned Cartier had been cashing the allegedly stolen checks at the time she claimed to be a hostage.
The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency was brought into the investigation and the agency is following up on additional drug information, Brooks said.
On Thursday morning, Cartier was taken to the Lisbon Police Department for questioning and subsequently was arrested.
She posted $350 unsecured bail and will be arraigned in Lewiston District Court on March 18.
