MEXICO – Developing a fiscal 2010 budget promises to be a challenge for the Region 9 School of Applied Technology.
Director Brenda Gammon said a lot depends on the financial strength of the region’s three sending districts and cuts in state aid to them.
Last year’s budget was just under $1.9 million, largely because of the building and renovation project just completed at the River Road school.
“Our goal is to maintain the current offerings and staff,” Gammon said.
Among unknowns: Higher costs for insurance and to operate and maintain the larger facility.
Voters in the 16-town region act on the budget in May.
One area of concern deals with more use of staff, the building and equipment.
“What other types of programs could we offer to vocational students? How could plumbing and electrical tie in with the building trades, or welding with metal trades?” she asked.
The Finance Committee will meet Monday to begin work, then likely meet every two weeks until a budget is ready to go before the full board.
New on the committee this year is Lynn Arizzi, a representative from SAD 44 appointed to replace Keith Farrington. Other Finance Committee members are Randy Canwell from SAD 43, and Wayne Thurston representing SAD 21.
In other matters during Wednesday’s monthly meeting, Gammon said directors voted to buy 12 smart boards for use in each vocational classroom or lab and one in the adult education department. The boards allow for interactive learning by combining computers, television and other technology. The $70,000 cost was part of the $4.9 million renovation and addition project.
Also, directors authorized the Finance Committee to award the contract to buy several security cameras and two electronic buzzers. Anticipated cost is about $20,000 and comes from the building project.
“This is for the safety of our students and staff and to prevent thefts,” Gammon said.
The next regular board meeting will be Feb. 10.
