LEWISTON – Residents will be asked to weigh in on a list of guiding principles for city government, part of a strategic planning process, at a meeting next week.

The city is hosting the second in a series of three meetings for Lewiston residents, workers and property owners. Community Relations Coordinator Dottie Perham-Whittier said those people will be asked to break up into seven groups and discuss each of the proposed goals.

“The first meeting discussed peoples’ dreams and the opportunities and challenges that Lewiston faces,” she said. “This one is more specific. We want to follow up and discuss the work we’ve done since the first meeting.”

The meeting is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St.

A third meeting is scheduled for Feb. 23, and staff should have a draft of the plan ready. City staff is scheduled to present the finished plan to the City Council by March 10.

The project’s goal is to provide a long-term set of rationales for future decisions, from planning and zoning to economic growth and redevelopment.

City staff has been tapping neighborhood groups since the Dec. 1 meeting, Perham-Whittier said. They’ve met with business groups, including the Chamber of Commerce, land use groups like the Stanton Bird Club and the Androscoggin Land Trust, and downtown development and community service organizations. So far, the city has met with 15 groups and plans to meet with 25 more before the process wraps up in March.
