JAY – Otis Federal Credit Union donated $5,000 to Maine’s Paper and Heritage Museum on Thursday to help raise matching funds to restore the museum’s exterior.
The group is trying to raise $25,000 to match a $25,000 grant through the Livermore Falls business enterprise grant program for handicapped access and to restore some of the features of the building from the 1960s.
The museum is on Church Street in Livermore Falls. The organization has already raised more than $5,000 through fundraising on its own and donations.
It has a little more than $10,000 to go toward the grant match, museum board member Roland Poirier said. He is also the president and chief executive officer of the credit union, which was started years ago by paper mill workers.
If the museum gets the grant, it plans to have a handicap accessibility ramp built, restore the windows to the sun porch and three windows on the front of the building and put in an automatic door-opener.
The board has also submitted funding requests to Jay for $1,000, Livermore for $500 and Livermore Falls for $1,000 to be raised at the annual town meetings to help with the building restoration.
International Paper donated the 103-year-old former mill manager’s house to the museum to display its artifacts on the paper industry and its heritage.
Other fundraisers are planned to help reach the grant match. A benefit concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Treat Memorial Library Auditorium by singer/songwriter Phil Poirier of Livermore Falls. He will perform his original music, a mix of contemporary folk and blues. Donation requested is $5.
