CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Rebecca McGill, 16, of Connecticut, has died from injuries suffered after crashing into a tree at Sugarloaf/USA on Tuesday.
McGill, a student at Stratton Mountain School in Vermont, was at the resort with other students as part of Sugarloaf’s annual Speed Week training camp, geared to train competitive ski racers. At the time of the accident, she was “free skiing” and not participating in sanctioned training activities.
Ethan Austin, a spokesman for Sugarloaf, confirmed that McGill was hurt while skiing on the Spillway Trail. She lost control and skied into the woods, hitting a tree.
Ski Patrol took McGill to Carrabassett Valley Airport, where she was taken by LifeFlight of Maine to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She died at the hospital on Wednesday.
A slalom racer, McGill’s last competition was Jan. 14 in Okemo, Vt.
A call to Stratton Mountain School was not returned.
The last skier death at Sugarloaf was April 2007 when freshman legislator Abigail Holman died when she crossed the finish line of an annual fundraising race and hit a tree. Last January, a snowboarder died on the slopes.
According to the National Ski Areas Association, during the 2007-08 season, 53 fatalities occurred out of the 60.5 million skier/snowboarder days reported across the country for the season.
Forty-four of the fatalities were skiers (38 male, 6 female) and nine of the fatalities were snowboarders (8 male, 1 female).
