Here we go again – the pros and cons of same-sex marriage.

My husband and I attended a beautiful, romantic, love-filled gay commitment service as guests of one of the gay grooms. We have also participated in a lesbian commitment service. My husband was the best man for one of the brides. The latter was performed by the minister of an open and affirming UCC church. Yet here we are, married for 55 years, and neither of these weddings did in any way or form alter our relationship, contrary to the opinion of some people. Imagine that.

By the way, it’s the one man/one woman group that’s causing the divorce rate to increase.

If people want to make a constitutional amendment on same-sex marriage, think about this simple change: “Every consenting adult human couple commits to a civil union at the courthouse at the time they get their marriage license.” This way, same-sex, as well as heterosexual couples will receive equal legal rights under the law.

After their civil commitment service, couples would be free to opt for a religious marriage ceremony at the church of their choice, or not; go on to the wedding reception, away for their honeymoon, and life ever after.

I guess this solution is just too common sensical.
