LEWISTON – The St. Dom’s hockey team is going from one extreme to the other.
After not having a game for almost a week, the Saints have back-to-back outings this weekend.
St. Dom’s used Friday’s return to game action as a good precursor to Saturday’s showdown at Brewer. The Saints dominated Cheverus in a convincing 10-1 win.
“The only thing I was worried about was we hadn’t played since our Lewiston game,” said St. Dom’s coach Steve Ouellette. “You end a game that’s an overtime loss. It’s been awhile. As opposed to getting right back on the horse, it’s been a full week waiting to play. That was the part I was kind of scared about. So to get a goal or two early was good.”
The Saints (5-4) outshot the Stags (2-6-1) 15-0 in the first period and produced three quick goals. The Saints finished the game with a 50-6 advantage in shots.
“We knew they weren’t the strongest team,” said Saints defenseman Joe Klemanski, who had two goals and two assists. “We wanted to put a lot of goals in the net and just skate hard.”
The Saints were ranked ninth in the latest Western A standings and now embark on the home stretch of their schedule. It is a welcome change after a week off from playing games.
“Practice is great and all, but at this point in the season, you want to be playing and getting into that game rhythm,” said Ouellette. “I know we’re going to be at it now because with three weeks to go, we still have nine games to go.”
C.J. Bergeron added two goals for the Saints while Spencer Martin and Ben Randall each had a goal and an assist. Richard Paradis had four assists.
“It’s not good to have a whole week off,” said Klemanski. “(Saturday) we have a big game with Brewer. So this is a good confidence booster for a big game tomorrow.”
Casey Parker got the first goal just 2:18 into the game. He put home a loose rebound in front. Martin added a one-timer at 3:59 and Klemanski followed with a blast from the point that went through a screen.
“We moved the puck and did some nice things with it,” said Ouellette.
Cheverus didn’t get its first shot on goal until 3:06 of the second period. The Saints added three more goals in a span of two minutes. Bergeron netted his first of two in the period at 6:45. Randall added a wrister at 8:10, and Klemanski followed with his second at 8:45.
Cheverus’ lone goal came on a two-man advantage when Cameron Bell scored with 1:58 left. The Saints scored a shorthanded tally at the end of the power play when Bergeron scored his second.
“We scored three goals in the first period, and we started to lay back,” said Klemanski. “After a couple minutes, we started to jump back up.”
The Saints added goals from Cam Brown, Alex Parker and Brian Mathieu in the third.
