BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) – Connecticut officials are warning about the dangers of misjudging thin ice after a man visiting Bridgeport from Arizona fell into a pond at Beardsley Park.

Authorities say 28-year-old Dante Everette did not realize the ice was so thin when he walked onto the frozen pond Saturday to feed ducks.

They say Everette was in the icy water for up to 12 minutes before strangers spotted him and threw cables into the water to pull him out. He was treated for hypothermia at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Officials say the water was so cold that Everette might have died if he had not been found so quickly.

They are warning people to avoid walking, skating or fishing on ice ponds unless they have been assured by public safety authorities that it is thick enough to be safe.
