Farmington – Velma Ada Smith Corson, 95, died Jan. 22, at Orchard Park Nursing Home in Farmington.

She was born in Farmington at home on Knowlton’s Corner on July 15, 1913, the daughter of Bert Levi Smith and Ada Dyke Smith. She graduated from the Red School House in 1926. She always went to school in the horse and wagon or sleigh. She was married Sept. 10, 1936, to Cleon Alton Corson in Oakland, by the Rev. Will Kelly.

She worked for the Farmington School lunch program for 25 years. She was the first school lunch director for SAD #9 when it became a district.

Velma was a member of the Farmington Grange, Pomona, state and national Grange, also an honorary member of the junior Grange. A member of Irene Luce Philatha, the Red School House Extension, a 4-H member and leader, member of Northern Lights Snowmobile Club, Triple Town Swingers and Sandy River Promenaders square dance. She enjoyed trips to Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Nova Scotia to square dance.

Always enjoying the family at Camp Fleda on Stony Brook in Wyman Township. She loved to brook fish. She was member of the Maine Pony Teamsters since 1983. She just loved going to the fairs. In 2008, she spent a week at Farmington Fair and Fryeburg Fair.

Cleon and Velma built their first new house on 16 Lincoln St., where the college recreation center now stands. They built their second new house on Morrison Hill in 1970, where they got much pleasure in working an apple orchard and raising Blue Roan Mountian Welch ponies.

She is survived by sister Marilyn and husband, Elliott Powers; three children, Doane B. Corson and wife, Donna, of Casco, Donald C. Corson and wife, Linda, of Farmington and Mildred A. MacDonald and husband, Mike, of Pittston; 10 grandchildren, Deborah Stebins of New Gloucester, Micheal Corson of Naples, Melissa Jones of Wilton, Peter Corson of Farmington, Donna Hinkley of Farmington, Penny Braacket of Farmington, Jody MacDonald of Portland, Shawn MacDonald of Cheyenne, Wyo., Craig MacDonald of Buckfield, Erin Knox of Ninilchik, Alaska, and Danielle Minott of West Gardiner; 17 great-great grandchildren, Letitia Morel, Virginia Hinkley, Nicholas MacDonald, Lori and Kelly Stebbins, Cristina and Jessia Corson, Andrea and Evan Jones, Brittany Victoria and Aricka Corson, James and Agnes Corson, Karryn MacDonald, Sarah and Mackenzie MacDonald, James and Agnes Bracket; sister-in-law, Ann Corson; nieces and nephews, Anita and Jo Martin, Joyce and Dick Morton, Judy and Dale Fairbanks, Rodney and Marge Powers, Carla Dwyer, Raymond and Shirley Smith, David and Sue Norton; and special cousins, Wesley Dyke’s family, Merle and Liz Smith, Brent and Bertha Smith, Lawrence, Gaynelle and Scott Yeaton and Elaine Smith Cote.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleon Alton Corson.
