NEW GLOUCESTER – In less than five minutes, voters at Monday’s town meeting gave unanimous approval to leasing land to the historical society to build a museum.

The agreement is for 75 years and $1 per year.

The New Gloucester Historical Society plans to build a 30- by 40-foot barn on a small piece of land beside the Lower Gloucester Fire Station and behind the town hall in the National Historic District. The building would hold the society’s collection of items.

The society is preparing to celebrate its 75th year. It is also planning a fundraising campaign for the barn project, which received a donation last summer from society President Nancy Wilcox.

Wilcox said the site is perfect for the collection of the town’s history. Parking at the site will be convenient, too.

Donald Libby served as moderator at Monday’s meeting.
