Goodbye ESPN, hello oldies.

Radio listeners across the region will notice a change in format next week on 870 AM (Portland area) and 1470 AM (Lewiston/Auburn area), and will no longer hear one of the most recognizable brands in sports broadcasting.

The Lewiston Maineiacs, whose games are broadcast live on both AM frequencies, will remain on the air through the end of this season, programming director Sean Baker said.

“The Maineiacs will still be airing on both stations, that coverage won’t change at all,” Baker said. “As far as I know, for now, that will be the only sports coverage on our station.”

The Oldies Channel will launch on Feb. 2, with a playlist focusing on songs from 1956 to 1969.

“The traditional Oldies format has been missing from the Southern and Central Maine market,” said Patrick Collins, Senior VP and Market Manager for Nassau Broadcasting. “We are thrilled to be able to return this format to the market and partner with WCSH News Center 6 at the same time.”

Channel 6’s Morning Report will be heard seven days a week, while News Center at 5, 5:30 and 6 will air Monday through Friday.

This will replace WCSH’s availability at the bottom of the FM dial 87.7 FM), which will end with the shift to an all-digital format.

“We know Mainers have come to rely on our radio signal,” said WCSH President and General Manager Steve Thaxton. “We’ve worked for months to find a radio partner to join with us to continue this valuable service. The value of the service is particularly evident during widespread or extended power outages, such as the one caused by December’s ice storm.”
