This is in response to Kalle Oakes’ Jan. 21 column about the possibility of the Lewiston Maineiacs leaving town.

I’m a season ticket holder who hopes the team will stay, and that the community will support them. Most fans realize what a great product we have here and that we’ve truly been spoiled. But more than wins and losses, it’s about supporting the kids, coaches, staff and owner. I appreciate the entertainment value the Maineiacs bring to the table.

Mark Just and Matt McKnight are passionate about making the team successful. I believe anyone who has enjoyed watching the Maineiacs for the past five-plus years should make every effort to support them. Otherwise, we’ll be reminiscing about how great it used to be when the Maineiacs played here.

Oakes accurately points out the harsh reality that we could, indeed, lose the team, and no one would dispute that. But I do take exception with the manner in which Oakes reported the story.

Oakes exacerbates an already fragile situation with the injection of repeated negativity and sarcasm in his column. Instead of rallying the community to support the team and boost attendance, he chooses to dump on the 200th home game festivities and jersey promotion. And instead of giving Just and the boys a pat on the back in support, Oakes’ article suggests a “Who cares?” attitude, basically telling them not to let the door hit them on the way out.
