BETHEL – James Dock, Bethel Historical Society development director, has announced the receipt of a $1,000 grant from the Mt. Abram Ski Club to assist the society with the expense of producing a new exhibit on the history of skiing in the Bethel area and to emphasize the continued significance of the ski industry in Western Maine.

The exhibit, expected to open in the fall of 2009, will feature old photographs, brochures, letters, posters (some dating back to the 1920s) and antique skis.

Although the majority of these items will come from the Bethel Historical Society and Maine Ski Museum collections, local residents and businesses will also be encouraged to loan memorabilia for display.

“We are, of course, delighted with Mt. Abram Ski Club’s support for this exhibition,” said Dock. “Skiing is an important subject of historical interest and we are pleased to be able to offer an opportunity for our public to learn more about its history and influence upon life here in our region.”

He said, “The Mt. Abram Ski Club’s gift will go a long way toward covering the cost of display materials, photographic enlargements, small exhibit cases and other items to ensure a successful, professional exhibit.”

Dock also encouraged anyone interested in supporting the exhibit or loaning items for display to contact him at the society.
