GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) – Lindsey Vonn called it a “perfect” day.

She won a World Cup slalom, extended her overall lead in the standings and moved within one win of tying Tamara McKinney’s American record of 18 victories.

Vonw earned her 17th career World Cup win in a combined time of 1 minute, 47.17 seconds, and best friend Maria Riesch of Germany finished second.

“It’s perfect, it’s a great day,” said Vonn, who had a blistering second run to move from third and post her second slalom win of the season. “It’s also perfect for Maria to be second. We are best friends and for us to be 1-2 on the podium, it couldn’t be better. It was amazing.”

Collecting 100 points, Vonn has a season total of 1,014 in her bid to retain the overall World Cup title. Riesch is second at 890.

“There are still a lot of races left in the season and I hope we can both stay at the top and fight until the end. It’s cool,” said Vonn, a winner of four races, including the season-opening slalom.

Marusa Ferk of Slovenia had a career best finish to take third, clocking 1:48.33. She was only 16th after the first run but had the fastest second run after Vonn.

Hailey Duke of the United States, in eighth place after the first run, went off the course in the second. She climbed back to finish last in 27th place.

Vonn has spent Christmas holidays in Garmisch with Riesch’s family and is well known at the resort. But she had not practiced on the slope this winter.

“Although I hadn’t skied on the slope, it felt like a second home with Maria’s family here,” Vonn said. “Her fans were supporting me, too. For me, it’s a matter of feeling good. I attacked.”

Riesch said making the podium in her hometown was “a dream come true.”

“I was under a lot of pressure, especially since my first run wasn’t so good,” said Riesch, who moved up from sixth. “Of course I benefited from the falls of the two Austrians.”

Kathrin Zettel of Austria, who had a big lead going into the second run, made mistake halfway down the Gudiberg course, missed a gate and was disqualified. Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria, who was second after the first run, fell in the second.

Several top-ranked racers did not finish the first run, including Anja Paerson of Sweden, Nicole Gius of Italy, Sandra Gini of Switzerland and Monika Bergmann of Germany. Paerson straddled a gate, Gius clipped a gate and the others slipped off the course.

With two slalom races left, Riesch leads the discipline standings with 580 points, 140 points ahead of Vonn.

It was the last women’s slalom race before the World Championships, which starts next week in Val d’Isere, France. The women also have a Super-G on Saturday.

The men will compete in the downhill on Saturday and slalom on Sunday.
