LEWISTON – A disagreement among spectators over “somebody’s language” at the end of Saturday’s Maineiacs game involved a punch being thrown and two patrons being ejected from the arena.

No charges were filed and there were no injuries, police said.

“Someone was concerned with somebody’s language and made a comment, ‘Hey can you watch your language? There are kids here.’ The other man responded, ‘Hey, it’s a hockey game’,” and the two started arguing,” police Sgt. David St. Pierre said.

The verbal argument turned physical. “They got each other in headlocks. There was a punch thrown. But it was pretty much contained quickly,” St. Pierre said.

Multiple spectators said Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert, a former police chief and U.S. marshal, became involved in the fight.

The scuffle had no impact on the game, St. Pierre said.
