VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) – Authorities in Indiana say a high school basketball fan has been arrested for attacking a referee – who is also an Indiana state trooper. Police said the man rushed out of the stands at Washington Township High School, yelling at referees who included Indiana State Trooper Glen Fifield.

The trooper said he tried to walk away but the man pushed him. Fifield said he identified himself as a police officer and told the man he was under arrest, but the man said he couldn’t be arrested by a referee. Officials said the man tried to choke Fifield with his whistle neckstrap.

Fifield said that once the man realized he really had attacked a trooper, he retorted: “That’s not fair.”

He faces charges of battery and resisting arrest.
