LEWISTON – Despite setbacks, not the least of which were a fire at Lewiston High School and site problems at Lewiston Middle School, LHS will present “Little Women the Musical” Feb. 19, 20 and 21.

The venue: Schaeffer Theatre on the Bates College campus.

Based on the classic best-selling novel by Louisa May Alcott, “Little Women” is a timeless story of courage and ambition spanning three years in the lives of Jo March’s family and friends.

The high-energy musical centers on Jo March (played by Brittany Martin) and her journey to become a world-famous published author so she can provide for her loving and supportive family: the romantic and wistful Meg (Amanda Martin); the sweet, encouraging Beth (Veronica Beaudoin); the somewhat spoiled baby of the family, Amy (Suzannah Wong); and the demure mother, Marmee (Sarah Patterson), who holds the family together with quiet strength while their father is away serving as a chaplain in the Union army.

Other characters include the crotchety Mr. Laurence (played by Nate Chaloux); his orphaned grandson and Jo’s best friend, Laurie (Scott Gagne) and his tutor, John Brooke (Derrick Lacasse); Aunt March (Becca Spilecki); boarding house owner Mrs. Kirk (Marissa Lussier); and Professor Bhaer (Ryan Dubois).

Characters in Jo March’s bloody operatic tragedy include the fair Clarissa (played by Mackenzi Masselli), the villainous Braxton Prendergast (Chris Belanger), the heroic Rodrigo (Scott Gagne and Ruth Choate), a hag (Christina Zahn), a troll (Leslie Reed) and a knight (Justin Fortier).

“Little Women the Musical” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the theater at 305 College St. Tickets will be sold at the door: $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets may also be purchased for $5 by calling 783-0958, the Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre box office, and requesting tickets for “Little Women.” Tickets are also being sold online at www.laclt.com (but please note that “Little Women” will be staged at Schaeffer Theatre, not Lewiston Middle School as the online box office states).
