This is in response to the article printed Jan. 28 that started “Perplexing. Foolish. A terrible thing for people and businesses. A waste for a city in dire need. Sad. These were among the responses ” which the Sun Journal chose to publish, above the fold, on the front page, to the exclusion of all other points of view.

I support finding savings through expanded consolidation of bureaucracy and offering joint services between Auburn and Lewiston. So do Mayor John Jenkins and the council members who agreed with his plan to end the study commission.

Why do they think the commission was ineffective at furthering its own universally-approved agenda? Why does the commission think its mere (taxpayer-funded) existence serves to get the ball rolling when it hasn’t in the past? I don’t know – those questions weren’t asked, answered, or printed in that issue of the newspaper.

The Sun Journal’s coverage has shown more heat than light, and the editorial page has clearly spilled over into the news section. The editorial writer claimed that Jenkins and the City Council don’t think, have a vacuum “betwixt their ears,” and are “disrespectful.”

The mayor, who was drafted by the people and won an impressive write-in campaign, is one of the best-liked and most-trusted people on either side of the river.

The juvenile name-calling lowers the civility of discourse. Remind me again, just who is “disrespectful?”
