FARMINGTON – County commissioners tabled action on medical services for inmates at the Franklin County Detention Center on Tuesday.

With 25 days of service left from the county’s health provider, Wilson Stream Family Practice, commissioners wanted more information about a bid from Correctional Medical Services before making a decision.

Six vendors, including Wilson Stream Family Practice, bid for the contract, Jail Administrator Sandra Collins said. Wilson Stream took over coverage from Franklin Memorial Hospital but withdrew its bid after realizing the costs of liability insurance, Collins said. While the administrator is happy with its work, the service will end March 1.

“All the bids are more than we can afford,” Collins told the commissioners, who questioned if a $64,000 bid from CMS was based on three counties or if it would apply to Franklin County if two other counties also seeking medical contracts did not participate. Piscataquis and Penobscot counties joined Franklin County to seek medical service bids, she said.

CMS is based in Missouri and provides coverage for Cumberland County and the Maine Department of Corrections.

The medical service provides physical exams to inmates jailed for more than two weeks, does tuberculosis and DNA testing, Collins said.

Commissioners also faced uncertainty about the future of the facility and what type of contract they should agree upon.

They agreed to table the decision until their next meeting Feb. 17.
